Files and the terminal

The terminal lets you control the computer by typing commands. Developers use it every day. The essentials:

pwd # show which folder you are in
ls # list what is in this folder (dir on Windows)
cd projects # move into the folder "projects"
cd .. # move up one folder
mkdir notes # make a new folder called "notes"

A path is a file's address, for example /Users/you/projects/app.py.

Check yourself

1. Which command shows the folder you are in now?

2. How do you move up one folder?

3. Which command lists the files in a folder?

4. How do you make a new folder called projects?
